Government Relations Update
April Highlights:
The Board of Regents met on Monday and Tuesday of this week but had a shortened agenda due to the orientation of new members. The Board welcomed three new members: Brian Krist, Esq., Keith B. Wiley, and Felicia Thomas-Williams. SAANYS looks forward to working with these new members as New York continues to ensure that students’ rights are upheld and schools continue to be safe and supportive environments. The majority of this abbreviated meeting consisted of two presentations focused on students with disabilities.

On April 3, 2025, NYSED received a letter from the US Department of Education (ED) requesting certification that NYSED complies with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. In addition to the certification, the letter also required that within 10 days, NYSED had to obtain individual certifications from every LEA (local school district).
