Principal Supervisor Instructional Standards

As you may know, the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) and the National Policy Board for Educational Administration (NPBEA) are engaged in an effort to refresh standards for district and school leaders to reflect research-based evidence and experience gained since the last update of the ISLLC standards in 2008. More than 70 principals, superintendents, state education department staff, education professors, researchers, and others have been involved in this effort over the past year.

Within this larger effort, CCSSO and NPBEA are working to develop model Principal Supervisor Instructional Standards for states and districts to use as a framework to set expectations for the central office leaders who supervise school principals. CCSSO initiated a public comment on November 3, which will run until December 1, 2014.

As a member of NPBEA, NAESP has been actively involved to ensure the input of principals. We encourage you to weigh in on these standards. The survey may be accessed by clicking here. After the comment period, the standards will be revised, approved, and released early next year.

This document contains a short summary on the development of the principal supervisor instructional standards that will prepare you for the public comment survey. When the standards and functions have been refined based on feedback from principals, state and district representatives, a guidance document on the Principal Supervisor Instructional Standards will be developed, published, and disseminated to states, Wallace districts,partners, and professional leadership associations.
