Statement from Board of Regents Chancellor Merryl H. Tisch

“The evaluation law enacted earlier this month by the Governor and Legislature set a November 15 deadline for approval of new evaluation plans for teachers and principals. Additional state aid for school districts is tied to meeting that unrealistic deadline. Over the past few weeks, I’ve heard from administrators, teachers and school boards across the state.  They’re concerned about the very tight timeframe, and they’re right.  And I’m worried about the fiscal implications for districts that can’t meet that deadline.  Students should not be denied resources because of adult disagreements.

“Today, I’ve directed State Education Department  staff to find a solution that administratively extends the deadline for evaluation approval until September 1, 2016 for districts facing hardships meeting the deadline.  I’ve also directed SED staff to meet with staff from Governor’s Office and the Legislature to find a solution consistent with the intent of the law.

“Our students deserve the best education we can give them, and a well-thought out, effective evaluation system is integral to providing that education.   We’ll continue our work to develop a fair, effective evaluation plan by June 30. “
