The state budget is now five weeks late, and administrators across the state are faced with very difficult decisions regarding their own school district budgets. The SAANYS Government Relations Committee (GRC) was in Albany last week to meet with legislators and state education officials to express their concerns and challenges at this point in the school year. Many of the districts that the GRC members represent have faced potential layoffs and significant program cuts.
The SAANYS GRC meetings were very timely, as the governor presented an overview of major conceptual components of the final state budget this morning. The information shared in the update, based on the press conference, is very general in nature, and SAANYS will not have budget details or funding levels until the actual bills are released, which may not be until the middle of next week.
