Grad Measures & Evaluations Discussed at Regents Meeting
On November 4-5, 2024 the New York State Board of Regents held its monthly meeting and discussed several key issues of importance to SAANYS members. Major topics included the graduation measures initiative and new regulations for annual performance reviews of educators.
1. Implementation of Graduation Measures Initiative
The Regents continued their review of the phased implementation of the graduation measures initiative, which centers on the “portrait of a graduate.” This initiative aims at ensuring graduates are critical thinkers, global citizens, innovative problem solvers, and are culturally competent. The goal is to increase student choice, provide multiple pathways to graduation, and ensure equity and real-world readiness across the education system.
2. Proposed Amendments to Evaluations of Classroom Teachers and Building Principals
The Regents discussed proposed amendments to educator evaluations, aiming to align them with Chapter 143 of the Laws of 2024 and the graduation measures initiative. The revised system is intended to support professional growth for teachers and principals.
