The School Leadership Pipeline – Vanguard Call for Submissions
“That tap on the shoulder – when someone you trust sees your brilliance and leadership potential – can be miraculous.”

Succession planning is no longer limited to principal positions; districts and schools are increasingly creating transition plans for all leadership roles. However, the impact of school administrator turnover and competency on student learning is well-documented. A 2021 Wallace Foundation study found that replacing a principal at the 25th percentile in effectiveness with one at the 75th percentile can increase annual student learning in math and reading by almost three months.
To reduce the disruptions caused by turnover and to strengthen the effectiveness of school leadership, many districts are investing in grow-your-own leadership pipelines. These initiatives identify, mentor, and develop teachers and staff who show strong leadership potential. Targeted coaching and sustained mentoring have emerged as essential components, helping to build a pool of confident, capable leaders who are better prepared to step into school and district leadership roles.
SAANYS is eager to share grow-your-own programs from districts of all sizes and among all administrative roles. Whether such programs are established or less formal, share with colleagues efforts to ensure leadership stability and growth in your school building and/or district.
