Government Relations Update

The Year Ahead

The next year and a half are likely to be critical for education. The issues that are in the news daily have a direct impact on the roles and responsibilities of building administrators.

SAANYS understands the importance of keeping our membership well-informed. In order to do this, we will increase communications to members and remain highly active in all federal and state-level discussions, as well as in policy-making decisions.

We ask that you help us stay informed by taking a few minutes of your time to fill out our important fall survey. The results will inform us on the implementation of recent initiatives as well as your priorities and needs. Thank you in advance for your help on this – legislators and key state educational leaders are always more attentive when we use our survey results.

Secondly, SAANYS leadership has been very active early in the legislative cycle. We want to make sure that we are quick out of the gate in representing our members during the budget process, and to have legislators understand the challenges facing our schools.

On September 12, Executive Director Jennifer Carlson and CSA President Henry Rubio met with Senator Mayer (Senate Chair of the Education Committee), Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins (above right, center), and Senator John Liu (Chair of the NYC Education Committee, pictured above left, center). Some key discussion items included:

  • ensuring sufficient state aid to schools, considering federal cuts,
  • requiring an assistant principal in each school building in the Big 5 School Districts,
  • maintaining funding for student mental health services,
  • increasing COLA for our retirees, and
  • revising Tier VI to incentivize entrance and continued participation in the field of education.
