The reduced probationary tenure bill was signed by Governor Cuomo today, October 4, 2019. SAANYS is pleased to have worked with the governor, Senator Mayer, and Assemblyman Benedetto on this important legislation to our members.
The new law provides school administrators, transitioning to a new administrative position, a probationary period of three years, instead of the currently mandated four years. The law is specific to administrators who have been granted tenure in a previous school district, the current school district of employment, or a board of cooperative educational services. The effective date is June 1, 2020, so that administrators who begin a probationary period after such date will be afforded this three-year tenure period provided, as stated, one has been granted tenure in a previous school district, the current school district of employment, or a board of cooperative educational services.
SAANYS worked in collaboration with the Conference of Big 5 School Districts, New York State School Boards Association (NYSSBA), New York State Association of School Attorneys (NYSASA), New York State Federation of School Administrators (NYSFSA), and the New York State Council of School Superintendents (NYSCOSS) on this legislation.
